Can you tell us a little about what you do?

Dr. Suzan Bekir is an experienced General Practitioner at Taylor Clinic, where she practices family medicine amongst a collective of specialty interests including sexual health, paediatrics, mental health, HRT, vitamin therapy, nutritional medicine, allergy + ENT, cosmetic medicine, skin and laser medicine.
She completed her medical degree at the UNSW in 2004 and vocationally trained with the RACGP. She worked in medical clinics in Rose Bay and Bondi before opening her own private rooms in Double Bay in 2015.
As Clinical Director, she innovated GP shared care with primary care speciality clinics in Allergy, ENT, and Skin, designed for the Health Care Homes of the future. Dr Suzie continues to work alongside her partner Dr Tobias Pincock, ENT (Adult and Paediatric) and Facial Plastic, where they clinically consult and are clinical supervisors for Special Skills Mentorship programs for Doctors.
Dr. Suzie has dedicated much of her time to medical education and is passionate about up-skilling General Practitioners to deliver more comprehensive health services in Allergy, ENT, Skin Medicine as well as training GP’s on medical grade lasers, non surgical and surgical cosmetic medicine treatments, body sculpting procedures and vagina restorative laser procedures. Amongst this, Dr. Bekir also enjoys medical journalism especially producing medical education content. Her interests also spans Daoist Meditation principles, qui gong + healing practices.

After many years helping companies develop and sell successful products, Linda York founded her own company StickyLickits, a revolutionary edible sticker that inspires kids to eat fruits and vegetables, and make it fun. Linda, a mother and grandmother was so passionate to help solve parents #1 health concern to get their kids to eat more produce, she developed StickyLickits eat-able stickers to market. Linda started and funded StickyLickits all natural, sugar free edible stickers, that turn healthy eating for kids into an interactive, fun activity. Linda is successful in creating a new and exciting way for parents to add a lot of fun to snack time, as children can now enjoy eating and exploring new fruits and veggies by decorating them with StickyLickits, which feature some of Nickelodeon's beloved animated characters including, SpongeBob, SquarePants and PAW Patrol.
At the start of her career, Linda segued from finance to entertainment when she started working with Academy Award winner, Alan Arkin, to fund and produce movies. That brought her from New York to Los Angeles where she founded a production and development company with Emmy Award winning TV producer, Francine Bergman where they developed, produced and did post production on movies, television shows, infomercials and commercials. Then Linda became Creative Director of BeachBody, the world’s leading creator of fitness and nutrition programs, including P90X, TurboJam, Insanity, Shakeology, where she developed project: YouType2, the only exercise and nutrition program that has ever been approved by the American Diabetes Association to reverse and prevent type 2 diabetes. The work on that project lead to a passion for working on wellness projects that would help children develop habits for healthy eating and exercising. She produced the fitness component for the largest study that has ever been done on childhood obesity in the United States. It was conducted by the NIH(National Institute of Health) under the direction of Dr. Fran Kaufman, and studied over ten thousand children in different areas of the country. After that, she became part of a discovery group that evaluated fitness programs for children.

When you say for the first time this type of research is being conducted, why do you feel this research is critical to the advancement of healthy brain development in individuals with or without a disability?
You coined the term “population neuroscience”. Tell us what that means exactly.
How long do you believe the study will take and what do you hope to achieve from the research findings.

Dr. Tomas Paus, Director of Population Neuroscience and Developmental Neuroimaging Program, Holland Blooview Hospital is a distinguished senior scientist, and director of Population Neuroscience & Developmental Neuroimaging for Holland Bloorview’s research institute (the Bloorview Research Institute). This critical new role supports Holland Bloorview as the future home of Ontario’s first, fully-accessible child-friendly research MRI and further establishes itself as a premier international center for the study of child and youth brains.
Over the past 15 years, Paus’ work has focused on brain maturation, particularly in adolescence. His interest in population neuroscience – the “big data” approach to studying how brain structure and function is shaped by the interaction of genes and our environment – is vital to the Bloorview Research Institute’s growth strategy, which includes state-of-the-art discovery hubs in machine learning and artificial intelligence, imaging, and neuromodulation.
The Bloorview Research Institute is the research arm of Holland Bloorview, an academic health science center fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Dr. Charles Price is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida and director of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute which he established with the help of comedian Larry the Cable Guy in 2009.
A past president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of North (ASAMI), Dr. Price was chairman for 10 years of the International Pediatric Orthopaedic Symposium which he formed in 1998. He was instrumental in developing the muscularskeletal module for the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.
Dr. Price has contributed to the advancement of pediatric orthopaedics in the areas of limb lengthening, limb deformity correction, non-operative and operative management of scoliosis, and hip disorders in children. He is internationally known for his clinical and academic achievements including numerous scientific publications and book chapters on a variety of subjects.
His wide range of knowledge brings a perspective of experience that is extremely valuable to the group.

CSIP and the Partnership for Drug Free Kids are launching Medicine Safe, a new coalition of national and state public and private organizations dedicated to helping families understand the opioid epidemic, medicine safety and how to prevent and treat addiction.

Before we talk about the new coalition, let’s give our listeners some background. It seems that every day we are hearing about the opioid epidemic in the country. Can you give us some insight into how widespread it is?
When you talk about opioids, are you only talking about prescription painkillers?
Why are so many more people addicted now?
Some say eliminating opioids, limiting the number of pills prescribed or incarcerating more people will solve the crisis. Do you agree?
What about prevention?
It seems like an impossible situation. Let’s talk about the new coalition CSIP and the Partnership started. What is Medicine Safe?
What makes MedicineSafe different from all of the other organizations trying to curb the opioid epidemic?
Marjorie Clifton is the Executive Director for the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies (CSIP) and has been helping develop international awareness and policies around medicine safety, illegal online pharmacies and counterfeit medicines since 2011.
In her role with CSIP she has built global coalitions, communications strategies and campaigns to drive impact and awareness on a range of issues impacting consumers, corporations and global citizens.
Marjorie has helped stand up global organizations supporting CSIP’s mission and participates in an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) working group. She is also called upon regularly to speak on the topic of online counterfeiting and consumer protection at industry conferences, government stakeholder meetings and international forums such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Department of Trade, U.S. Department of Commerce, the Global Trade Organization, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, APEC, the Internet for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and Merchant Acquirers’ Committee (MAC). Ms. Clifton is also a published author and media commentator, appearing regularly on CNN, Fox, NBC, MSNBC, PBS and global radio.Marjorie received her bachelor’s degree in Communications and Spanish from the University of Texas. She received her master’s from Drama Studio London. She is currently a fellow and advisory board member for the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation at the University of Texas and serves on the board for the School of Undergraduate Studies.
