In your book, Outsmarting Obesity, you write extensively about the Healthy At Every Size Movement (HAES). Can you explain what the "Healthy at Every Size" (HAES) movement is, especially for those who might not be familiar with it?
Your book "Outsmarting Obesity" addresses the obesity epidemic. Can you briefly outline the key concerns or challenges contributing to this issue?
Are there studies or evidence suggesting any limitations or challenges with the HAES philosophy in promoting long-term health outcomes?
What are your main critiques of the "Healthy at Every Size" (HAES) movement, especially in the context of managing and addressing obesity?

Dr. Stewart Lonky, a practicing physician specializing in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care, with a biochemistry background and a 10 year career at UCSD medical school and now in private practice for 35 years.
Dr. Lonky has a strong background in toxicology and legal medicine and also has an MBA from Pepperdine University and has served as Chief Medical Officer and Regulatory Affairs Director for a medical device company. He has a strong research background, facing problems with patients who are getting more obese, year after year, compromising my ability to care for them as outpatients and as inpatients.

He is also board certified in obesity medicine and utilizes that to care for his patients with metabolic syndrome associated liver disease. His clinical research interests include liver cancer, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, obesity medicine, autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatitis and liver transplant outcomes.

What is the prevalence of fatty liver disease in children, and who should we be screening?
When screening a child for fatty liver disease, what are some of the tools used to evaluate for the disease, and how is the diagnosis of pediatric fatty liver disease made?
What is the natural history of pediatric liver disease, and how does this differ from adult fatty liver disease?
What are the current recommendations for the treatment of pediatric fatty liver disease?
Are there other diseases associated with pediatric fatty liver disease?
As a pediatric hepatologist at Duke University, Dr. Mavis cares for children of all ages with a variety of liver diseases and patients with improperly functioning small bowel/intestinal failure requiring long-term nutritional support. She also cares for patients needing a liver and/or small bowel transplant.
One of the most common diseases seen in her clinic is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an increasing chronic condition in pediatrics that parallels the obesity epidemic. NAFLD and other chronic liver diseases place a significant burden on the child as well as the function of the family. Dr. Mavis’ goal is to do everything possible to support and encourage the child and family to maintain full participation across all aspects of life while managing their disease.
Her specific areas of interest are NAFLD, portal hypertension, liver transplant, and Fontan associated liver disease. Much of her research focuses on transplant outcomes and pediatric NAFLD, specifically relationships between early life changes and risk factors, nutritional aspects of fatty liver disease, and the impact of metabolic phenotype.

James LaValle, is a nationally recognized clinical pharmacist, author, board certified clinical nutritionist, founder of Metabolic Code Enterprises, Inc., a web platform and practice solution enterprise, launching AIR Support and the Metabolic Code Assessment. In addition, he founded an Practices at Progressive Medical Center in Orange County, CA. In 2001 he founded and operated LaValle Metabolic Institute, an interdisciplinary medicine facility in Cincinnati for the past 15 years (sold in 2014) where he served thousands of patients using his metabolic model for health. He also founded Integrative Health Resources 15 years ago, which is focused as a natural products industry consulting company. James has 27 years’ experience integrating natural therapies into various medical and business models. James is probably best known for his expertise in natural therapeutics application and drug/nutrient depletion issues and uncovering the underlying metabolic issues that keep people from feeling healthy and vital.
