John Schaeffer is a renowned sports and fitness trainer, author and nutritionist. He began his career as a teen, and during the past forty years, he has become an accomplished professional athlete, including a five-time World Champion in Powerlifting and a Masters Super Heavyweight World Champion in Professional Kickboxing. Joy Kakabeeke has worn many hats before opening her studio in 2010. She graduated from Arizona State University in 1996 with a degree in Mathematics Secondary Education. She began teaching high school and college level mathematics in 1996 and while continuing her education at the University of Phoenix. She graduated with a Masters in Educational Leadership in 1999 and continued to teach in Phoenix, Arizona through 2001.
Joy moved back to Michigan in the summer of 2001 and began teaching mathematics at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo. After giving birth to her daughter in 2006, Joy taught for just a while longer and then retired from teaching. Since then, she continues to work hard as a mother and she also works part time as a Caribbean and European Specialist for Paradise Getaways, LLC.
Joy has been practicing yoga since 2005. She found that, after a serious car accident and then being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, yoga far exceeded her expectations for better health. Joy Kakabeeke completed her teacher training and became a certified yoga teacher in the summer of 2010. Shortly thereafter, she opened up Yoga Reflections so that she can share the wonderful benefits of yoga with others.
All of the certified, experienced and trained instructors at Yoga Reflections truly understand that each person's abilities are different and have a varying degree of limitation. Sharon Starika has a deep passion for running, having been a competitive triathlete for more than 20 years. After a debilitating accident with a semi-truck two decades ago, Sharon’s doctors gave her little hope of ever running again since she had undergone nine surgeries on her left side. Through practicing the Feldenkrais Method she was able to heal herself, run, and compete again.
From Sharon’s remarkable recovery, she found her passion for movement and realized that she wanted to teach others to move with greater ease, comfort, less pain, and to live fuller lives with movement. Movement includes running, skiing, cycling, hiking, or just getting out of a chair. For Sharon, as her mentor and life-time teacher Moshe Feldenkrais said, “Movement is life!”
Sharon is a Guild Feldenkrais Practitioner, with her private practice based in Park City. She also teaches classes and clinics around the country and offers instructional online classes, local clinics and workshops. Carol Michaels is the founder and creator of Recovery Fitness®, an exercise program designed to help cancer patients recover from surgery and treatments. She owns and operates Recovery Fitness and Carol Michaels Fitness in Short Hills, New Jersey and is a trailblazer in the area of cancer and exercise. She has worked with physicians and other health professionals to develop her recovery fitness program, which is currently offered at her studio, hospitals, cancer support organizations, and community centers. She understands the needs of a cancer survivor and developed a practical program to help them reach their goals.
Carol is a Cancer Exercise Specialist and consultant and has been a fitness professional for more than 18 years. She received her degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and is certified by The Cancer Exercise Training Institute, American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine, and is a member of ACSM and IDEA.
Carol is a speaker for corporate wellness programs, fundraisers, and community events on fitness and health issues. She is on the advisory board of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, and is an ambassador for HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation. She has recently held workshops for: The American Cancer Society, Gilda’s Club, FORCE, Atlantic Healthy Lifestyles, Pathways, St. Barnabas Hospital, and Morristown Cancer Center.
Carol has appeared on health related television programs. She is an author of a chapter in the e-book called Ten to Thrive. She was a columnist for PFP magazine, and has written for The American Academy of Health and Fitness, The National Lymphedema Network, and numerous cancer publications.
The American Council on Exercise and Life Fitness recognized her as a Trainer to Watch in 2011. Personal Fitness Professional honored her as the 2012 PFP Trainer of the Year.
