Upon completion of his medical training, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha for scholastic achievement in this field. His post-graduate specialized training included stints in Philadelphia and Salt Lake City. After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years in Germany, he returned to Indianapolis to complete has training and to begin medical practice.
Dr. Tavel is a physician specialist in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to managing patients for many years, he holds a teaching position (Clinical Professor) at Indiana University School of Medicine and regularly teaches medical students, house staff physicians, and other medical personnel. At present, Dr. Tavel is collaborating with a commercial enterprise in the development of a radically new stethoscope design that utilizes wireless computer and cell phone technology to record and transmit heart sounds and provide a platform for instruction of students.
All these activities do not prevent Dr. Tavel from engaging in an active personal life that includes travel with an educational focus, hiking, cycling, racquet sports, golf and fishing. Since he is a strong advocate of regular aerobic exercise, he has followed his own prescription in his endeavors for many years, activities that he hopes have provided motivation to both his patients as well as his trainees. He continues to reside in the Indianapolis area with his caring and supportive wife, Betty.

Lilypad Scales Brings Weight into the Home for Wheelchair Users
Wednesday Aug 19, 2015
Wednesday Aug 19, 2015
Molly Farison, CEO of Lilypad Scales, makers of the first wheelchair scale designed for home use joins eHealth Radio and the Health News and Weight Management Channels.Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels and guest Molly Farison discuss the following: How did you come up with the Lilypad Scale? Why is weight important for wheelchair users? How is weight management different for wheelchair users? How do most wheelchair users currently weigh themselves?Would the Lilypad Scale be used by doctors?
Tip: Studies have shown that weighing yourself on a regular basis is an effective way to manage your weight!
Duration: 7:31
Molly Farison is the co-founder and CEO of Lilypad Scales, a Boston based startup company making an easy-to-use home scale for wheelchair users. Weight management is critical for wheelchair users as every pound they gain is another pound they need to lift when they transfer onto the toilet, into the shower, into bed, or for any other daily activities. Yet, people who use wheelchairs are twice as likely to be obese compared to the general population.
Weighing yourself regularly as been shown to be an effective way to manage weight, but it has been unavailable to wheelchair users due to the prohibitive cost and bulky design. This has led to people going to extreme lengths to be weighed, using a dog scale at the vet or even a morgue scale in a hospital. Lilypad Scales solves these problems with its lightweight, portable scale design meant for use at home.

The Whole Story: Dr. Mike Discusses The Fallacy of the Calorie
Monday Jul 13, 2015
Monday Jul 13, 2015
Dr. Michael Fenster, aka Dr. Mike, Board-certified interventional cardiologist and author of the new book, "The Fallacy of the Calorie: Why the Modern Western Diet is Killing Us and How to Stop It" again joins eHealth Radio and the Nutrition & Health News Channels.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Michael Fenster discuss the following:
Your new book, "The Fallacy of the Calorie" discusses why we as a culture are obsessed with dieting, counting calories, restrictive eating, and so forth, and also warns that sometimes even the lowest calorie processed staples (like diet, zero-calorie soda) are the WORST things we can ingest in our bodies. Yet there is now the technology side of obession, aka "digital dieting", where we are taking diet and fitness apps to an extreme. Now even Google is getting heat for releasing a-calorie counting app for our food pics on Instagram! What's your take on this? There's a new study that was done on mice at Oregon State University indicating that diets high in sugar and fat may impair cognition by changing gut bacteria. The effects were most severe on a high sugar diet, which was also linked to a deficit in early learning for both long term and short term memory. Your book discusses how we're hard-wired to crave things like sugar, salt, and fat. How can we diminish these cravings and possibly re-wire our brains to crave whole foods so we can avoid the harmful effects on our cognitive states and gut bacteria? There is however, hope on the horizon. Recent articles show that nutrition experts are deciding to drop recommended restrictions on total fat consumption in the forthcoming 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Wonderful news that the tides are changing! Do you, the standard federal guidelines moving in a new direction in the next five years, given all this new information we have that low-fat dieting is NOT the answer? Summer is in full swing and that means we still have weeks to enjoy BBQs, indulgent vacations, and of course, summer cocktails! What are some of your favorite go-to healthy summer recipes that are simple, fun to make, and of course delicious and in season? What's next on the horizon? New book? Will you be speaking at any conferences this year? What courses are you teaching? Tell us all about it! If you could provide the #1 health myth that we can completely ignore because it's completely bogus (besides counting calories), what would it be?
Duration: 12:21
