SleepPhones, providing healthy sleep alternatives with Dr. Wei-Shin Lai

Friday Feb 14, 2014
Dr. Wei-Shin Lai, inventor of SleepPhones and CEO of AcousticSheep, LLC, providing healthy sleep alternatives to consumers joins eHealth Radio and the Health and Technology Channels.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Wei-Shin Lai discuss the following:Please tell us about your background and what led to your invention of SleepPhones. How do SleepPhones work? And what’s the difference between the wireless and wired versions? How do SleepPhones improve people’s lives? How are SleepPhones better than other sleep aids?Who can use SleepPhones?
Duration: 18:22
One night, after a 3 a.m. phone call from the emergency room, Dr. Wei-Shin Lai had so much trouble falling back to sleep that she decided she had to do something.
Her husband suggested she listen to relaxing music, which was a nice idea– but there were no headphones on the market comfortable enough to sleep in. They put their skills to work and designed the first SleepPhones, a comfortable, innovative headphone solution designed to help people fall asleep. Dr. Lai would come home after work to sew headbands while her husband soldered the speakers on the kitchen table. By 2007, they’d created a website and sold the first 500 set of SleepPhones.
Born in Taiwan, Dr. Lai came to the US when she was 7 years old while her father completed a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee. She grew up under the strict tutelage of a “tiger” mom, competing in piano, learning algebra in 5th grade, and leading numerous science clubs in high school. She went on to earn a B.S. with distinction in Cellular Molecular Biology at the University of Michigan with the intent of studying the Ebola virus. However, her thirst for adventure and travel was tamed when she realized that for her to be truly happy, she had to interact with people instead of staying holed up in a lab. She graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School and went into family medicine.
Dr. Lai loves being a mom and continues to work part-time at Penn State University's Student Health Center as the only Mandarin-speaking physician on staff. Her hobbies include swimming, hunting for wild mushrooms with the Central Pennsylvania Mushroom Club, archery, and gardening. She enjoys eating and cooking spicy international foods and is obsessed with eating healthfully, including at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day. She's one of those moms who hides vegetables in everything she cooks.
She sleeps 7-8 hours a night on average, and her favorite music on her SleepPhones is a hypnosis track by her friend, Dr. Steven Gurgevich who teaches at Dr. Andrew Weil's Center for Integrative Medicine.
Listeners or readers who would like to learn more about Dr. Wei-Shin Lai's SleepPhones, should visit the company's website: www.sleepphones.com.

Duration: 16:37
At the beginning of 2003 in Dallas, Timothy Armes, the founder and CEO of leading job board Jobs.com, took over the nursing internet portal and nursing job board NursesLounge.com. In 2009, www.nurseslounge.com was re-launched as the first Professional Network for Nurses and designed to provide organizations such as schools, associations and employers a more efficient way to communicate important information to nursing professionals such as news, meetings and CEs on a timely basis.
The mission of Nurses Lounge is to aggregate the nursing profession in a modern online communications network thereby dramatically improving the ability for nurses to stay professionally informed and connected to the organizations and colleagues that matter to their careers.
To accomplish this mission, Nurses Lounge designed and developed a modern, simple to use professional networking platform created to facilitate career development, education, nursing staff management and professional best practices.
Nursing schools, associations, hospitals/clinics and related industry organizations can create a branded interactive "Lounge" as an adjunct to their core websites. This allows the instant distribution of information to their students/employees/members with a few clicks. They can also post ads ranging from banners to job listings.
Individual members (nurses and nursing students) create a professional profile page, receive, share and interact with nursing-related news and connect with colleagues and organizations important to their careers.
The Network evolved from Nurses Lounge Magazine, a localized direct mail publication which was published from 2003 - 2011.
Today there are more than three million nurses in the U.S. and Canada, and thousands of hospitals/medical clinics, nursing schools and nursing associations that can benefit as members of the Nurses Lounge. As of November 2013, NursesLounge.com has relationships with more than 150 nursing schools, associations and employers, and more than 12,000 individual members.

Steve Howard, the Director of Sales and Marketing for DigitalOne Reports providing a unique set of low cost and easy to implement tools to connect radiology with the referring physician for delivering results and images, receiving orders and minimizing internal IT cost joins eHealth Radio and the Health Care and Technology Channels.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Steve Howard discuss the following:I understand DigitalOne has been in radiology for a long time. Can you tell the audience a little about DigitalOne?You mentioned connectivity and your company tag line is “Connectivity is Opportunity”, what does that mean for your prospective clients? What are the challenges your clients face that DigitalOne addresses? You had mentioned to me your company engages in significant conversations with imaging centers every day. Is there one thing that is common in all of your discussions? What does a typical client look like for DigitalOne?
Tip: Imaging centers need to realize that healthcare reform is here to stay and the impact of electronic medical records on their business will continue. In addition, RIS/PACS systems will not be the “holy grail” of an IT solution that meets all of their needs. However, the opportunity is now. Take advantage of the ways in which they can secure existing referrals as well as grow new referral sources with low cost incremental steps that generate long-term ROI. Reimbursements are not the only element of their business under siege; a combination of cost cutting defensive measures combined with protecting as well as increasing referrals only makes sense.
Duration: 10:13
DigitalOne was started by a group of talented individuals experienced in the development of radiology information systems and healthcare workflow process affecting radiology, maternal fetal medicine, general medicine and community hospitals.
Formed in 2001 as a medical document solutions company, DigitalOne quickly became known as a multi-faceted solution provider delivering a single point of access to all documents. Hospitals, clinics, physicians and municipalities counted on DigitalOne to manage faxes, scanned paper documents, emails and other critical documents made available via print capture and electronic files.
By 2004 DigitalOne was delivering critical document management solutions to radiologist and imaging centers. This came as a direct result of the DigitalOne’s management teams experience developing radiology information systems. DigitalOne’s reputation grew quickly as a reliable source for seamless integration between disparate information systems and that experience led to its position today as a leading solution provider for the integration between RIS and EMR systems.
Today DigitalOne offers a suite of tools used for EMR integration, Results delivery with PACS integration, Orders receipt and management from referring physicians, Critical alert and document management, Patient Portal and Mobile access.
