Dr. Annette Nunez is a highly sought after Autism expert, author and founder and director of Breakthrough Interventions, LLC, a multi-dimensional therapeutic program with specialized one-on-one programs at home and in school for children with autism. She is a licensed psychotherapist and has worked with children with ASD and other related disorders for over 20 years.Dr. Nunez’s mission is to enrich the lives of children by providing academic, behavioral, cognitive and social support so that each child will be integrated into general educational classrooms, be able to develop friendships with peers, and become productive, independent individuals.She received a BA in Psychology, an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Ph.D. in Quantitative Research Methods with a specialization in Child Development. At UCLA, she studied and trained with renowned autism expert, Dr. Ivar Lovaas on Discrete Trial Training (DTT). She also received training from the Institute for Child Development in California on the Floortime Approach and developed a successful behavioral program that combined aspects of DTT and Floortime.As part of her doctorate work at the University of Denver, Dr. Nunez developed the Children’s Social Competence Scale (CSCS). The CSCS is an early intervention evaluation tool that measures social competency in young children. She serves as the Program Director for Connect Us, a non-profit organization that helps children cultivate positive relationships through facilitated play. Her research interests include the mainstreaming and socialization of children with High Functioning Autism and Aspberger’s.Dr. Nunez wrote the The BI Approach, as well as a book titled Friendship Is, a touching children’s book which shows just how children with autism care for others in their own unique ways and takes a unique look at social acceptance and friendship. She is currently writing a book about the SCIP Model that will be published by early next year.She conducts many seminars throughout the country and in China and plans to continue educating parents and professionals about mainstreaming and socialization of children with HFA and Aspberger’s. Dr. Nunez was recently honored by the Autism Society of Colorado as a finalist for the 2011 Faces of Autism Professional Award.

Heather Marenda-Miller, CCC-SLP, Clinical Co-Director Born and raised in Illinois, Heather received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Communication Disorders and Sciences from Eastern Illinois University. She moved to Southern California from Chicago in 2006 for better weather and the beach. Heather is a current California licensed and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified speech-language pathologist. She specializes in treating children ranging in age from birth to 6 years. With a high interest and much experience treating children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Autism Spectrum Disorders, Heather is also particularly interested in children who are gifted and/or Twice Exceptional (2e). Heather is the owner and director of Speech Me, LLC and the co-founder and co-director of Social Scouts™. Training and working closely with staff is a not only a requirement but truly a delight for Heather. As a practicing speech-language pathologist, Heather treats clients with a vast array of diagnoses and disorders, enjoying the uniqueness each child brings to her clinic. Working closely with children and their families is why she loves being in private practice. Heather enjoys utilizing her creativity and developing new and innovative activities on a daily basis and uses what her client’s mother coined as “The Marenda Method”- an eclectic approach combining the various techniques she has learned throughout her years as a clinician to ensure best and most effective and individualized techniques for each child she treats. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and licensed by the state of California in speech-language pathology. She has remained a resident of Los Angeles where she is currently the owner and director of Splash for Speech, Inc. and the co-founder and co-director of Social Scouts™. Amy has always had a passion for working with children and has made the pediatric population the core of her caseload. Since the completion of her graduate studies, she has engrossed herself into her career and strives to provide the best quality of speech therapy possible. Amy has extensive experience working with children with a wide variety of communication challenges and diagnoses, including Developmental Apraxia of Speech, Autism Spectrum Disorders, various genetic syndromes, developmental delays, speech and language delays, and articulation problems. Ahrens is Project Co-ordinator of the European funded I Family research project into what drives food and lifestyle choice in European children and families and how those choices impact on lifelong health.

The I Family Study won funding from Europe in the face of strong competition. What was it about your proposal and your ambitions for the 5 year research project that secured that approval and the funding?
What is the I Family Study contributing to further our understanding of how European families and children in particular can be helped to live healthier lives? What’s new in terms of science and evidence that can help individuals help themselves?
What would be the one key, that the I Family Study and their message for families and particularly parents about how they can help their children invest in their life long health? Is it food choice or is it engaging in physical activity – where should parents place their efforts? How can we help ourselves and our families to combat obesity and other health issues?
What practical advice can I Family give to healthcare professionals across Europe as to how best they can support families? Where should they put their efforts? Are there interventions that work & can be relied on to provide that support?
Can families and healthcare professionals on their own deliver the change that’s needed to combat the global long-term trend towards sed-en-tary lives and weight gain? Isn’t there a need for Europe-wide and also national regulation to combat this trend?
Conclusion: At an individual level there is much that families – adults and children – can do to help themselves if they prioritise their lifelong health. But at a population level, to support particularly the most vulnerable/those with least advantages, as professionals we believe there has to be appropriate regulation and policies to help us all combat modern society and life which makes it too easy to eat and act less healthily than we should.
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ahrens is professor of epidemiological methods at the faculty of mathematics and computer science of the University of Bremen, Germany. He is Deputy Director of the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS in Bremen and head of the department Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research. Having finished his biology studies in 1985 he worked as scientific assistant in numerous epidemiologic studies with focus on work- and environment-related cancer.
In the years 1995-1998 he established the working group Epidemiology at the Institute for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology, University Clinic Essen. After his PhD thesis on "Retrospective assessment of occupational exposure in epidemiological case- control studies" he established the cross sectional division Epidemiological Methods and Field Work at the BIPS. From 1998-2003 he was Head of the division.
In 2000 he qualified as professor for Epidemiology and Public Health. In 2003 he was offered a W3-professorship for Epidemiological Methods at Bremen University. A key focus of his research addresses the causes of lifestyle diseases as well as their primary prevention and the scientific evaluation of intervention measures. Further research interests lie in the area of the aetiology of cancer with focus on environmental factors and occupational exposures and the use of secondary data for epidemiological research. He initiated the largest Europe-wide intervention study on overweight, obesity and other disorders in children conditioned by nutrition, lifestyle and social factors (www.idefics.eu; 2006-2012) and is currently coordinating the subsequent prospective cohort study on lifestyle, diet and exercise in children, adolescents and their parents - the I.Family study (www.ifamilystudy.eu; 2012-2017).
Furthermore, he is a Member of the Board of Directors, chair of the Northwest cluster and PI of the study centre Bremen of the German National Cohort (GNC). The German National Cohort is a joint interdisciplinary endeavour of scientists from the Helmholtz and the Leibniz Association, universities, and other research institutes. Its aim is to investigate the causes for the development of major chronic diseases, i.e. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative/-psychiatric diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, respiratory and infectious diseases, and their pre-clinical stages or functional health impairments. Tell us why you decided to write this book.
Why is INOCULATED such an important book?
In your subtitle you use the phrase – “How Science Lost its Soul in Autism” – please explain what you mean?
You share some startling revelations in the first three chapters, can you talk about some of them?
What first brought this subject to your attention?
Kent Heckenlively is a science teacher, an attorney, and a founding contributing editor of Age of Autism. During his undergrad years at St. Mary’s College, Heckenlively worked for U.S. Senator Pete Wilson and was the school’s Rhodes Scholar candidate. In law school at Golden Gate University, he was a writer and editor of the school’s law review, spending his summers working for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco.In the summer of 2010 and 2011, Heckenlively attended the Teacher Research Academy at Lawrence-Livermore National Laboratories, spending eight weeks in a virus lab investigating the expression of micro-RNAs in a monkey model of Ebola infection. Kent is also a member of the Compass group, a consortium of autism parents, leading scientists, and philanthropists in Silicon Valley looking for answers to neuro-immune diseases.Heckenlively served on the Executive Council of the San Ramon Valley Education Association for several years and was the Health and Safety Committee Chairman for the teacher’s union, representing more than 1,600 educators, therapists, and psychologists.In the fight against chronic diseases, Kent finds great wisdom in the strategy used by Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Mandela believed change could only come about when one engaged in satyagraha, a Buddhist concept which insists on speaking the absolute truth, while at the same time practicing ahimsa, a commitment not to harm those who might be your adversaries.
In November of 2014, Heckenlively published PLAGUE: One Scientist’s Intrepid Search for the Truth About Human Retroviruses, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Autism, and Other Diseases, with Dr. Judy Mikovits, a 20-year government scientist and former head of the Lab of Anti-Viral Drug Mechanisms at the National Cancer Institute. The reason for this is that our American medical system is based on the prevention of death rather than prevention of disease. 50% of Americans have life- shortening diseases by age 18.

Danni Tamburro is a lively young actress who has just completed her first movie, playing the daughter of an abusive Tom Arnold in the independent film, “1 Interrogation”, for release in 2016.
Danni is no newcomer to show business as she has been appearing in TV commercials since she was a year old! With several small parts in TV and some theatre under her belt, 19 year old Danni is ready to make a name for herself in TV and film.
In her spare time Danni volunteers at Children’s Hospital working with the siblings of terminally ill children in a program called “Shine on Siblings”. Danni is also a first class equestrian and is devoted to her puppy!
