Becky Kuehn, Owner of Evergreen SkinCare Solutions that provides skincare services for clients that are experiencing cancer and cancer therapies such as Chemo and Radiation joins eHealth Radio and Skin Care & Cancer Information Channels.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels and guest Becky Kuehn discuss the following:Share with us a little bit about your business/passion.This is different than most spa's, how did all of this get started? What types of things are important to know when working with a client who has cancer? Why is it different, why should they need to be trained, it's just hair and skin, right? You are certified in Oncology Esthetics - what is that, why is it important? How does one find you or if we don't live in your area, how do we find someone like you that is trained in Oncology Esthetics?
Duration: 14:45Becky’s dedication to caring for cancer patients unknowingly started at age 18 while in Beauty School, she was diagnosed with a rare form of Uterine Cancer, that at that time there had only been two other women in the US with that particular type of cancer. Both were in their 40’s and as the Dr. told her "the treatment and prognosis were unknown". She remembers the day she got the call from her Dr - like it was yesterday; it is an experience that you don’t ever forget...she did have Chemo and twice yearly checkups for many years and feels blessed to be able to report, she is a 36 yr cancer survivor.
The whole experience left a mark on her - she was touched by the care she received from some of the medical staff and shocked by the way she was treated by others. It made her realize that there really is power in touch especially when it is caring, loving and knowledgeable.
She wondered at the time, how she would incorporate what she learned to be able to share with others. It took 30 years - but her destiny was slowly beginning to unfold. It started with a book called: Oncology Esthetics: A Practioners Guide. Written by Morag Currin. Basically - it rocked her world. She had finally found the catalyst to use her passion for skin and her love of people to be able to really help and make a difference in the life of a person who was “traveling the cancer journey”.
She began by volunteering at her local hospital with the American Cancer Society and then created her own program to meet the specific needs of each person that she encountered. Her program is currently located in two local hospitals in WA and she works with Morag teaching the Oncology Esthetics classes in the US, sharing and teaching others how to safely care for the client who is experiencing cancer both physically and emotionally beginning with the first treatment.
She met a gentleman at the beginning of her journey that was diagnosed with stage 4 Renal cancer. He shared that he was told, there was no more treatment available for him and to prepare for the end of life and as he was only in his early 40’s, that was a hard thing to hear. So for him, it was finding joy in the little things, the things that made him happy. One of those was his weekly massage, but after a short period of time, his massage therapist learned of his medical condition and as he told Becky, “she fired me”. As he shared, he cried, as the one thing that given him joy, (being cared for by touch), was ripped out of his shortened life. This shouldn’t have happened and would not have if that spa therapist had been trained. Becky has made it her goal to train as many people as she can so that this NEVER happens again to anyone.

Karen Shayne, WSA Co-Founder and Cancer Survivor
Karen Shayne has been on “both sides of the desk” when it comes to cancer treatment. Not only does she have 20 years of experience as a healthcare administrator, but she has beaten cancer twice on her own. It was these extensive experiences with the treatment process that showed her how insufficient the resources for cancer survivors are, and inspired her to form the Women Survivors Alliance (WSA).
As Karen wrapped up her battle with cancer, she expected that everything would go back to the way it was before she'd been diagnosed. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case—soon after her treatments stopped, she began struggling with other issues. Rejoining “normal” society was difficult and depression set in. It wasn't until she became involved with Relay for Life that she realized her situation wasn't unusual—that it was, in fact, “normal” for survivors to face complicated physical and emotional challenges with very little in the way of support.
Karen's first efforts to help cancer survivors culminated in a nonprofit named “Billy's Wish,” an organization dedicated to helping children fight cancer through educational DVDs, CDs, and coloring books. These free materials explain what cancer is, and what children can expect from their treatment, all in an age-appropriate and encouraging manner. While she's still involved with Billy's Wish, Karen knew that she could contribute in an even bigger way to helping cancer survivors across the country.
After five years of research and planning, in 2012 Karen launched the National Women's Survivors Convention (NWSC), the nation's most important annual event for women cancer survivors. Participants from 49 states and 5 countries attended the inaugural convention, studying survivor's issues from a broad range of experts and teachers. When it became obvious that there was demand for a year-round presence, she helped start The Plum, a digital magazine for survivors all around the world.
In addition to her roles with the WSA and the NWSC, Karen served as Tennessee State Lead Ambassador for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and is currently as the Survivorship Committee Chairperson for the Tennessee Cancer Coalition. She lives in Nashville with her little dog Marley and in her limited spare time, she is a wannabe pro-style baker and loves to kick back and enjoy the spirit of her musical roots in Nashville.
Judy Pearson, WSA Co-Founder and Cancer Survivor
Originally from Michigan, Judy Pearson is an international speaker and award-winning writer with three published books. Her first two books, Belly of the Beast: a POW’s Inspiring True Story of Faith, Courage and Survival, and Wolves at the Door: the True Story of America’s Greatest Female Spy, are World War II biographies about ordinary people exhibiting extraordinary courage.
Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. It wasn’t the diagnosis or treatment that challenged her lifelong positive attitude. Rather, it was the laundry list of survivor ship issues that rocked her. This experience inspired her to write her third book, It's Just Hair: 20 Essential Life Lessons. The book’s lessons are appropriate for any life challenge and was a 2012 International Book Award finalist. Her continued search for a new “normal” in survivorship was what led her to Karen Shayne. And the Women Survivors Alliance (WSA) was born.
It was an excellent fit. Judy had been dedicated to building communities and helping women even before she was diagnosed with cancer. In 2005, she founded an organization called “Courage Concepts,” dedicated to cultivating courage in women and girls. Already an experienced keynote speaker and workshop leader, Judy brought the message of the fledgling WSA into brilliant, sparkling focus.
Judy now spends her time running the WSA and the National Women's Survivors Convention with co-founder Karen Shayne. She also continues to write, advocate for women survivors, and inspire women world-wide with her message of courage and determination. She splits her time between Chicago and at a lake house in Michigan with her husband David. Of course, she lives life to the fullest every day with very little spare time. But high on her list are trips to the gym, long power walks, a great book and a relaxing cocktail watching the sunset.

Jeri Donovan a brain tumor survivor and the founder of Well Traveled, one of the few wellness travel agencies in the US joins eHealth Radio and the Cancer Information and Health News Channels.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels and guest Jeri Donovan discuss the following:How were you diagnosed with a brain tumor? What are the challenges of living with a brain tumor? What are some of the challenges of working with the medical professionals? Why are second opinions so important, give some examples from your experience?Talk about the importance of being your own best advocate, examples of the what that might look like?Share with us a brief wellness travel update?

Jeri Donovan is the founder of Well Traveled, a boutique wellness travel agency that specializes in active adventure travel, spa destinations, yoga retreats, fitness vacations and wellness cruises. She offers wellness vacations for groups, solo travelers and couples. Planning wellness travel truly suits Jeri's soul and combined her insatiable passion for travel with her personal commitment to wellness for herself and for her clients.
In 2011, Jeri was diagnosed with a skull base brain tumor (mere months after completing a century bike ride). Long story short; most of the tumor adjacent to her brain stem was safely removed. However, Jeri’s recovery required lifestyle adjustments, both personally and professionally.
Jeri began to embrace different activities that suited her post surgery life. Yoga was at the top of the list. Long walks and hikes replaced running. And, in lieu of mountain biking, more miles covered by her road bike continued to create a Zen sort of experience.
Leaving her beloved teaching profession also became a post brain surgery necessity as single-sided deafness was one of the repercussion of the surgery that saved her life and left her sound sensitive.
Having long hindered a secret desire to work in the travel industry, Jeri switched gears. She immediately sought specialized training and became the very first travel professional to complete the Travel Institute’s Well-Being Travel Specialist certification program.
In addition to operating Well Traveled, Jeri is also committed to sharing the benefits of wellness travel and gives presentations to corporations, organizations and travel industry events.
