Dr. Richard Asarch, who is board certified in dermatology and a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery with a full practice and medical spa in Denver, Colorado joins eHealth Radio.
Listen to interview [audio player below] with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Richard Asarch discuss the following:
What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?
What types of skin cancers are treatable with the Mohs Surgery?
What can a patient expect on the day of surgery?
How effective is the Mohs Surgery?
How often should one be seeking checkups to prevent skin cancer?
What age group is at more risk for skin cancer?
What should a patient look for when choosing a Doctor to perform Mohs?
Dr. Richard Asarch heads the Asarch Center for Dermatology and Laser in Denver, CO, its accompanying state-of-the-art DermaSpa and is an Associate Clinical Professor for the Dept. of Dermatology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. As one of America’s top medical doctors, Dr. Asarch has spent 35 years in practice evaluating and adopting the latest advances in cosmetic dermatology. His experience and continued dedication to skin wellness led to the creation of DermaSpaRx, a comprehensive line of products designed to meet the needs of individual skin types.
An innovator in skin health, Dr. Asarch published his first book, “Turn Back Your Face Years” after studying the aging process of patients’ skin over decades. His theories on how skin ages and how that process could be remedied include dietary aspects he has addressed in his second book, “Beautiful Skin Diet” -recipes with ingredients that promote healthier skin.
These two pieces, topical skin care and diet, are two facets of what Dr. Asarch calls the four spheres in a complete skin care regime. The other two spheres are prevention and procedures. He practices his four-sphere theory out of his offices in Denver, CO where he also opened the first medical spa in the state.
His credentials start with earning his undergrad and medical school degrees at the University of Iowa. After he completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Oregon, he served as a General Medical Officer at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. He studied for a year in the Department of Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Iowa followed by another year of general surgery residency at the same institution. In addition to his private practice, he is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Asarch introduced Mohs Micrographic surgery, the procedure that has the highest cure rate for all skin cancers, to the State of Colorado in 1977 after he had studied with Dr. Frederic Mohs in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1983, Dr. Asarch was the first doctor in Colorado to incorporate laser treatments for skin issue correction. His current practice now houses seven state of the art lasers.
Dr. Asarch set up his dermatology and medical DermaSpa practices across the hall from each other, to give patients instant access when medical and cosmetic dermatological issues intertwine.
Dr. Asarch is married and has four sons and one daughter.

Dr. Elizabeth Chabner Thompson, athlete, physician, mother & creator and founder of Bffl Co., a fashionable line of bags, bras and surgical accessories for the modern age of breast treatment joins eHealth Radio.
Listen to interview [audio player below] with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Elizabeth Chabner Thompson discuss the following:
Tell us a little about your company. When, how and why did you start Bffl Co.?
You have a personal story that was part of the genesis of the business. Can you share that story with us?
What exactly is a Bffl Bag?
Tell us about the Brain Bffl bag, and how it came to be.
What other products do you sell?
Who benefits from Bffl Co. products?
Upon graduating from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1993, Dr. Elizabeth Chabner Thompson began devoting herself to taking care of women. When her mother developed breast cancer, Elizabeth decided to focus her career on this specific disease, and during her residency, also obtained a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard.
Elizabeth worked as a Radiation Oncologist while raising her four children. With the support of her husband, she continued to pursue her love of sports (marathon running, open water swimming, tennis and golf) while balancing her career and family.
In 2006, after years of breast surveillance, biopsies, and endless consultations with genetic counselors, Elizabeth underwent prophylactic mastectomies. The experience of recovering from this surgery and the interactions with her physicians led her to begin working in the reconstructive surgery practice, helping other women with the difficult decision-making and recovery from breast surgery.
As an athlete, physician and mother, Elizabeth felt that while the surgeries and radiation treatment for breast cancer have rapidly evolved (in some cases even been revolutionized), however, the garments she could offer to her patients undergoing radiation therapy and surgery were designed in the 1970s, for patients undergoing surgeries of the past.
Also, patients were concerned and confused about their surgeries: “What should I bring to the hospital? Why does this surgical bra hit just where my drains exit? What bra should I wear after my surgery to maximize the cosmetic outcome? When can I begin to exercise again?”
Elizabeth decided to design a fashionable line of bags, bras and surgical accessories for the modern age of breast treatment. Armed with scissors, needle and thread, Elizabeth cut and sewed bras together to meet the needs of the 21st century patient, and Bffl co was born!
The Breast Bffl Bag™ and axilla pilla™ were launched in 2011 to enhance the breast cancer patient experience. Elizabeth and her best friend, Sara Kerr Reges, RN, then created the TBI “Brain” Bffl Bag for patients recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury, Brain Trauma, Concussion, Brain Tumors and Stroke.
The Mommy C-Section Bffl Bag™ and the ultimate Hospital Bag, as well as the Masthead™ Breast Reconstruction Bra, the Surgical Bra, Radiation Bra, and other recovery products will be available in 2012.
For each condition-related Bffl Bag™ sold, Bffl co will donate 15% of the proceeds of profits to a charity providing research and support for that condition.
Bffl co will continue to create Bffl Bags™ for many conditions and causes. Do you have a suggestion for a new Bffl bag? Email Elizabeth at info@bfflco.com.

JANNA ANDREWS, M.D
Raised in upstate New York, Janna Andrews knew at an early age that she wanted to be a doctor. Raised by her mother, Janna’s academic pursuits were encouraged and supported through her mother’s sacrifice. For her undergraduate degree, Janna attended Princeton University and received a BA in molecular biology. She then went on to attend Temple University School of Medicine, after which she specialized in radiation oncology. At that time, Janna was discouraged from pursuing training in a specialty field; she was told that her community needed more primary care physicians of color. However, nobody could deny that minorities were diagnosed with cancer and other serious illnesses and should have representation in all fields of medicine.
During her training at Emory, Janna was exposed to extremely different patient populations while at the county hospital, Grady Memorial, the VA, and Emory University Hospital. The time spent at Emory truly cemented Janna’s commitment to recognizing and working to solve the prevalence of health care disparities in the field of oncology. At that point, Janna went on and completed a prestigious genitourinary fellowship under Dr. Mack Roach, chairman of Radiation Oncology at University of California in San Francisco.
As an attending physician, Janna specialized in Breast Cancer as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Indiana University School of Medicine. During her time at Indiana University, Janna served on the residency committee and worked diligently to recruit other minorities into the field of Radiation Oncology. She also worked with the Lieutenant Governor’s office in the Family and Social Services Program speaking to disadvantaged women regarding breast cancer and other health related issues; and on top of that, Janna worked with the Congressional Black Caucus in an effort to improve health care literacy within the minority community.
After some time, Janna decided to return to her home state to address some family health issues and devote more time to her family. It was at that time that she joined the staff at Winthrop University Hospital as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology, SUNY Stony Brook. Since joining the staff, Janna has been working diligently with the different physicians and community outreach programs focusing on breast cancer in both Nassau and Suffolk County. She’s in the works to bring the Witness project, a faith based educational program, to Winthrop to establish a connection with the community even before the diagnosis of breast cancer.
Janna continues to work on the Congressional subcommittee for Radiation Oncologists under the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncologist, as well as the Healthcare Access Training Subcommittee that focuses on recruiting and retaining minorities into Radiation Oncology for ASTRO.
As a female in a male dominated field, she has shaped the path of her career and faced all adversity with grace and confidence.
