Empowering Chiropractic Patients to Ask Better Questions

Monday Dec 03, 2018
Dr. Christine Goertz, who is the senor scientific advisor for the American Chiropractic Association as well as chairperson of ACA’s Committee on Quality Assurance and Accountability again joins eHealth Radio and the Chiropractor & Health News Channels. ACA represents members of the chiropractic profession nationwide and advocates for issues that are important to chiropractors and their patients.
Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels and guest Dr. Christine Goertz discuss the following:
Shared decision making is a hot topic in health care circles. Can you explain to us what is meant by shared decision making, and what is the American Chiropractic Association doing to promote it?
Tell us about ACA’s Choosing Wisely recommendations. The first one is about X-ray use for low back pain. I understand it’s one of the most widely adopted recommendations by groups participating in the Choosing Wisely program.
Your recommendations also address X-ray for charting progress. What should patients be aware of?
There are two recommendations that are similar – one is about the use of physical therapy modalities and another about the use of back supports without an active treatment plan. Can’t these things on their own provide relief?
We have a very bad problem with opioid overuse and abuse in this country, and one of the biggest reasons why opioids are prescribed is for low back pain. What do patients need to know if they are experiencing chronic low back pain?
Christine Goertz, DC, PhD, is the Chief Operating Officer of the Spine Institute for Quality. She is also President of Christine Goertz LLC and an Adjunct Associate at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Duke University Medical Center.
Prior to joining Spine Institute for Quality, she was vice chancellor of research and health policy at Palmer College of Chiropractic for 11 years. Her 25-year research career has focused on working with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement clinical and health services research studies designed to increase knowledge about the effectiveness and cost of complementary and integrative healthcare delivery. She has extensive experience in the administration of federal grants, both as a principal investigator and as a program official at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Goertz has received more than $30 million in federal funding as an investigator, primarily from NIH and the Department of Defense. Her areas of focus include the investigation of manual therapies for spine-related disorders, and integrative healthcare for cardiovascular disease. Goertz serves on the Board of Governors for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, where she has assumed numerous leadership roles, and is a member of the NIH/NCCIH National Advisory Council. She also chairs the American Chiropractic Association’s Committee on Quality Assurance and Accountability.
Goertz received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University and her PhD in health services research, policy and administration from the University of Minnesota.
