Listen to interview [audio player below] with host Eric Michaels & guests Dr. Lucas Chesser & Dr. Thorsten Stein discuss the following:
- What is chiropractic? What conditions do chiropractors see?
- Doctors - you mentioned this word "subluxation". Can you explain what this means?
- Why did you choose this career as opposed to any number of other health related fields?
- What is the most interesting case you've seen?
Dr. Lucas started his path toward the chiropractic healing art at a young age. When his idol, grandfather Seifert, underwent quintuple bypass heart surgery in 1995, it caused a paradigm shift. For the first time, he saw this symbol of strength lying in a hospital bed high on pain medication and clinching a pillow to his chest to relieve the agony of a broken sternum and a reconstructed cardiovascular system. Lucas thought, "There must be a way to prevent these diseases".
At the time, Dr. Lucas thought that traditional medical practices were the best way to nurture health in a community, so he decided to go to medical school. But on September 11th, 2001, his plans changed. He joined the U.S. Air Force in November of 2001. This turned out to be the best decision of his life. During his six-year military enlistment, Dr. Lucas served three tours in Iraq, won scholarships, military decorations and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. But the most important benefit was the ability to observe many medical doctors in practice and research various medical specialties.
During his time, he engaged in independent study of endocrinology, cardiology, oncology & family practice. One glaring contradiction became despairingly clear: none of these specialties really prevented anything. Patients typically do not visit doctor's offices until they are already experiencing symptoms of disease. Many times they are only one catastrophic event away from death. And if these people were already experiencing symptoms of disease, it meant that they had probably been ill for a significant period of time before that.
Was there a specialty that focused on nurturing health, or did all the healing arts focus almost exclusively on preventing death?
Through a strange twist of fate, Dr. Lucas met chiropractor Dr. Chris Cox in Tucson, Arizona. In five minutes, Dr. Cox articulated everything about health that Dr. Lucas thought, but had not been able to organize into a systematic philosophy of health. However, this paradigm is the foundational philosophy of chiropractic. It focuses on two basic premises. First, the human body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. Second, the nervous system is the primary organ system that facilitates all healing processes.
Without a healthy nervous system, the body's central processor (the brain) cannot effectively coordinate the actions of the rest of the organs within the body. The spine is the gatekeeper between the central nervous system and the organs, tissues and glands which rely on the brain for vital information. If the spine is allowed to deteriorate and degenerate, it compromises the integrity of the nervous system and a complex of symptoms known as vertebral subluxation complex (VSC) ensues. A nervous system under the stress of VSC can exhibit pain or adversely affect health and well-being.
The decision was made. Dr. Lucas tore up his application to the University of Arizona medical school and attended Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles, California. He immediately went to work and led three campus organizations while finishing a grueling curriculum. He also served the people and honed his skills during three missions to El Salvador and Guatemala. After attending these missions, Dr. Lucas learned to "expect miracles" because he saw the beautiful simplicity of the chiropractic philosophy at work. People who suffered needlessly for five or more years found relief in only a few visits. The body truly can regenerate when it is operating free from nerve interference.
Dr. Lucas graduated with a powerful mission to nurture a community of people who value their inborn ability to experience health and well-being. With a sound philosophy, superior skill in analysis and correction of vertebral subluxation complex utilizing the Gonstead method, and a firm foundation in nutrition and supplementation, Dr. Lucas stands ready to serve the Santa Barbara community.

Dr. Thorsten Stein, B.S. D.C., being 7’2” and having played professional basketball, he has experienced herniated discs and excruciating back pain himself. Just like you, he has gotten only slightly better with all kinds of treatments - until he found chiropractic.
A medical doctor friend turned him on to the Gonstead System. Based on mechanical principles, it provided scientific results and a true correction.
After a few adjustments, his pain disappeared and he actually regained his health. His new dream was to help people who have a hard time getting better, get well. He became a Gonstead Chiropractor himself and follows his true passion:
Helping the hopeless get well.
Patients from all over the valley, such as in Ahwatukee, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Scotsdale, Suncity, Surprise, Tempe but even as far as Flagstaff come to see him on a regular basis. But that's not all: even people from Europe, mainly Austria and Germany are coming to see him as patients.
